What is this?

Brutal kindness is the idea that true kindness and compassion are demonstrated through the expression of honest, and at times difficult, feedback. It is an approach that values the well-being of others, and seeks to support them according to their needs and interests, even if this means utilizing words, tones, and messages that can be harsh or direct. In this way, it is different from a traditional view of kindness where sweeping criticism or challenging feedback may be avoided in an effort not to hurt or upset the other person. By acknowledging and unpacking the complexity of relationships, needs and perspectives, brutal kindness attempts to offer a more authentic and holistic approach to kindness.
